Solid counting setup!
The media could not be loaded. So my little one got a hamster for Christmas. The kids named him Chorky. Fun fact about hamsters: they are corpuscular (awake at dawn and dusk) or nocturnal. So Chorky runs on his wheel darn near all....night....long. We all wondered, "how far is this little guy actually running? For a fat little rodent, he sure runs an unbelievable amount!" So I decided to make it into a little science experiment and a teaching project. I'll have the kid log and reset the revolutions daily for a couple of weeks. The hall effect sensor is 3-wire and threaded on its main body. The kit comes with a mounting bracket for the hall effect sensor, 2 washers and 2 nuts that thread on to the sensor body. The sensor itself has an LED light that blinks when it senses the magnet. The magnet is quite small and comes in a separate little baggie. One thing I noticed about the magnet is that the sensor would only pick up one side, not the other, so I'm glad I tested it out before mounting the magnet. I marked the side that the sensor picked up with a sharpie so that when I epoxied it to the little hamster wheel, I had it in the correct orientation. The base counting unit is simple, with 6 digits of good old fashioned clear bright 7 segment LED. I'm a fan of the "just ripped it out of a piece of industrial equipment" look. The rear has 5 terminals: 3 for the sensor and 2 for the 110VAC. Make sure you receive the correct voltage model, which is indicated by a filled in square on the label on top of the unit. In addition to the one I purchased, 110-240VAC, I noticed there are 3 other models: 12-24v DC, 36v DC, and 380v AC. These units use the indicated voltage, so for the 110-240 unit the included 2 blade wall outlet plug wires right up, no transformer / wall wart needed.Setup with this counter was a breeze. The included instructions were clear on how to wire the 5 terminals, for two power wires and either the included 3 wire hall effect sensor, or for a 2 wire simple contact switch. Either will trigger this counter, so it's flexible in its usage. Finally, I'm glad to know I'm not the only lunatic out there attaching an electronic counting rig to my kid's hamster wheel. I noticed when looking at another counter setup (similar base unit but with an optical sensor), somebody asked in the questions section if that setup would work for a hamster wheel. To that other soul asking that question: this! This is the setup you want!

You need technical experience
This product is more meant for an industrial application where the installer is certified in electrical safety and the device is protected by a properly rated enclosure. It works great and does the job, but I was surprised by the exposed 120V wires. Fortunately I know how to deal with that but if you aren't comfortable with electricity, this product is not for you.

Stops working after being used a few times
I bought one of these hall effect counters and it stopped working after I plugged it in the second time. I thought is was a fluke so I returned it and had it replaced with a new one. The second sensor worked a few times so I thought is was fine. A month later I went to use it again and it will only work with a much stronger magnet than the one that came with it.

Not Accurate
This will not count accurately @ 30 counts /second. Unit will not count that fast.

Works really well
Packaged nicely and appears to well built. The sensor is metal compared to less expensive plastic versions.
